Get your Swiss Passport this year! (if you can)

The governments of Zürich and Schaffhausen have actively invited foreigners living in their cantons and wishing to apply for Swiss citizenship to do so this year as the process will become more complicated from January 1st 2018.

Up until the end of this year it is still possible for people with B or even F permits to apply for citizenship, as of next year you will need to already be in possession of a C permit.

If you have lived for 12 years in Switzerland, (years count double if you were living here between the ages of 10 and 20) and have lived for 3 years in the canton of Lucerne out of the last 5 years; if you can speak German and have no criminal record then you have a good chance of getting Swiss nationality if you apply this year. More information here.

You can download a document in German explaining what the necessary steps (and costs) are for an application here.
