|What’s on| November 10 – 12

As always its an action packed weekend! Here’s a quick overview to get you started…

From the 9 – 12 November is Zebi the Central Switzerland Education Fair (Zentralschweizer Bildungsmesse) which takes place at the Messe Luzern (Horwerstrasse 87). More than 160 professional associations, schools and companies will be there to present various education and training opportunities. The fair is a vital platform for young people considering their career choices and anyone interested in further education. Entrance is free and the exhibition is open daily from 9:00 – 17:00. Friday

The Verkehrshaus have a new film called Journey to Space 3D about man’s insatiable curiosity to explore and discover the unknown! The film pays tribute to international cooperation and shows the vision of a near future beyond Earth: a manned mission to Mars within a generation. Beautiful and inspiring, it tells the story of the Space Shuttle program, the MIR, the ISS and the Hubble Telescope and pays tribute to these milestones in man’s journey to a future in space. Fascinating computer images show spaceships, landing modules, vehicles, and dwellings needed for interplanetary travel, landing, and settlement. Tickets can be brought online here and cost CHF 18.- for adults and CHF 14.- for children (ages 6 – 16)

On Friday evening Das Zelt presents ‘Classic meets Circus’ a modern circus spectacle at the highest level! World-class artistry combined with high-class classical music, beautiful film music and surprising comedy. More details can be found on the official website.

Also happening on Friday evening is Pink Panorama, the LGBT film festival, which is taking place from 9 – 15 November. The festival venue is the Stattkino (Löwenplatz 11, 6004 Luzern). Details of the programme can be found online here.

Saturday

A little bit further afield but definitely worth the journey is the Räbechilbi in Richterswil (8805 Richterswil) – Europes largest Turnip festival! Taking place each year on the second Saturday in November around 30 tons of turnips are transformed into carved lanterns and then paraded through the village. The event starts at 15:00 with an open air concert near the Paracelsus Hospital performed by Kadettenmusik Horgen. There will be stalls set up selling artistically carved gourds and tasty treats. The parade starts at 18:30 and lasts approximately 1 hour. Details can be found on the official website and details in English can be found here. Make sure you dress up warm as it can get rather chilly standing around watching!

From 11 – 19 November is the Lucerne Blues Festival taking place at the Grand Casino, Hotel Schweizerhof and Hotel Seeburg. This premier event has established itself as one of Europe’s top blues events! Every year, the organisers manage to track down performers covering every style of blues. More information can be found on the official website full details of the line up can be found here. Tickets can be brought online and start at CHF 76.90 for a day pass.

Sunday

If you are looking for a great Sunday Brunch option then why not check out Melissa’s Kitchen (Hirschengraben 19, 6003 Luzern)? Every Sunday from 9:00 – 14:00 they offer a diverse spread including home-made cakes and delicious coffee! Reservations can be made by email to info@melissas-kitchen.ch or by phone 041 260 33 33. At the Lukaskirche (Morgartenstrasse 16, 6003 Luzern) on Sunday is an Autumn concert “Fugato” by the Orchestra Santa Maria. This year is all about celebrating young musical talents. Three outstanding soloists will be preforming: cellist Milena Umiglia, violinist Yacin Elbay and Oboist Rebecca Devonas. The concert will be conducted by guest conductor Georg Köhler, who has already preformed with orchestras including the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Junge Philharmonie Deutschland. The concert begins at 17:00 and entrance is free. And finally, tickets for the Lucerne World Theatre Company’s Christmas production are now on sale! This years production is ‘A Christmas Tale’, a musical show for children and adults alike. For more information please visit their website.
