The Lozärner Weihnachtsmärt (Christmas market) on Franziskanerplatz has returned for the festive season. With its canopy of twinkling Christmas stars and the fragrance of lebkuchen gingerbread, spices, punch and mulled wine there is something to appeal to all ages! The market runs until Wednesday 20th December and is open daily from 11:00 – 20:00 (food stands stay open until 21:00). More information can be found on the website.
Starting on Friday afternoon, and running until the 24th December, is Stey’s Weihnachtszirkus (Christmas circus) at the Pilatusmarkt (Ringstrasse 19, 6010). With a varied programme to appeal to young and old this is a great reward for the kids after a productive morning of Christmas shopping! And best of all the performance is free. On Friday evening HotRock will be rocking the Stadtkeller (Sternenplatz 3,6004) with a wide repertoire including rhythm’n’blues, gospel, country and of course rock! Tickets are available online and can be brought here. The performance starts at 20:30.
From 12:00 – 18:00 on Saturday afternoon Steinenstrasse will be hosting the Steinengärtli Weihnachtsmärt with stalls selling Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, gifts and more! More information can be found on the Facebook event.
Also happening on Saturday afternoon, The Lucerne World Theatre Company presents ‘A Christmas Tale’ – a children friendly musical production! When nursery rhyme characters escape their stories all mayhem breaks lose! Join them for some Christmas cheer, fun and an exciting adventure. This children friendly theatre production is suitable for children ages 3+, so bring the whole family to sing along and help our heroes out as they set out on an amazing adventure! ‘Gospel meets Pop’ on Saturday evening as Das Zelt presents gospel choir Feel the Spirit with their latest performance! With over 90 singers under the direction of Ueli Reinhard this choir specialises in preforming modern gospel. The show promises to be a powerful and uplifting performance that the whole family will enjoy! Tickets start at CHF 33.- and can be brought online here. The performance starts at 19:30.
Saturday evening is going to be a busy time for Samiclaus! At 17:00 he will be making an appearance at the Klosterkirche Wesemlin (Wesemlinstrasse 42, 6006). There will be Kinderpunsch (non-alcoholic punch), Glühwein (mulled wine) und Lebkuchen (gingerbread) on offer! More information can be found here. He will also be visiting St. Karl’s Church (Spitalstrasse 93, 6004) at 17:15 that evening and visitors are welcomed to stay afterwards for a family friendly meal at the Church. More details here.
Sunday is also a busy day for the man in red! On Sunday evening Samiclaus will be visiting the Hofkirche St. Leodegar (St. Leodegarstrasse 6, 6006). The event starts at 17:00 and there will be accompanying music from brass band Abinchova. And magically he will also be making a tour of the Altstadt (from 17:00) starting at Kasernenplatz and ending in Mühleplatz! Phew! What a busy weekend! And finally a quick glimpse ahead to next week as on Tuesday evening (5 December) is the famous Klausjagen in Küssnacht! It begins at 20.15 with a clap of thunder as all the street lights are turned off…. The procession then makes its way through the town. This is a chance to see the “Geisslechlöpfer” in action and watch as up to 180 “Iffelen” pass silently. A spectacle not to be missed! But you’ll need to get there early to secure a good spot as up to 20,000 spectators are expected!
