Christmas Markets

This Sunday marked the first Sunday of Advent, so it is now completely acceptable to start feeling in a Christmas mood.

We thought that we would kick things off with some of the must do and see events

A favourite for all is the ice rink in front of the KKL, there is something completely magical about ice skating under the roof of the KKL seeing all the Christmas lights around town. The ice rink opens on November 24th at 16.00 and will run until January 2nd. The rink opens at various times and closes at 22.00. If you bring your own skates then it’s free.

Christmas markets are beginning to pop up all over town (although most will only open beginning of December), one of our favourite is the Venite market which will run from December 14 to 17. This market has stalls from all over the world so you can in case your aren’t going home for the holidays you will still probably be able to find some international cheer here.

If you like handmade crafts then every Saturday in December you will find the handcraft market on the Weinmarktplatz

You can buy your Christmas tree in many places, but there is something magical about going down to the lakeside to choose your Christmas tree, the trees are grown locally, the market is open from December 16 to 23.

Zurich has embraced the spirit of Christmas, there are many events to enjoy, starting with the Zwarowski Christmas Tree at the train station with over 7000 crystals adorning it to their Singing Christmas Tree and much more. More details here.

If you want to visit a special Christmas Market but don’t want to go abroad then head over to Einsiedeln their market is fantastic and whilst you’re there you don’t want to miss visiting the largest crèche in the world or taking in the contentiousness of the Benedict Abbey. The market runs from December 2 until 10. Read our post about it here.

SBB is giving special discounts to many Christmas Markets if you decide to go there by train.

Finally if you want to figure anything out about Christmas then you must go to this brilliant site  which has all the information you need from markets, special events and traditions.
