It’s the biggest event of the year in the Luzern calendar: Fasnacht is here!

Thursday aka. Schmutziger Donnerstag

The day starts at 5:00am on Thursday morning with the big bang and the arrival of the Fritschi family at Schweizerhofquai! If you haven’t witnessed it before then it’s well worth setting your alarm early to join the action! The streets will be full of people and the air will be filled with Guggenmusik as carnival in Luzern gets underway! At 14:00 is the big parade which starts at the Luzernerhof then takes the following route through the city: Schweizerhofquai – Schwanenplatz – Kapellplatz – Fritschibrunnen – pier – Bahnhofplatz – Pilatusstrasse – Viktoriaplatz – Winkelriedstrasse – Helvetiagarten / Waldstätterstrasse. Then from 15:00 – 24:00 in the Buobenmatt market hall there will be live music and plenty of refreshments available! From 20:00 is the Fasnachtsparty at the Hotel Schweizerhof (Schweizerhofquai, 6002) with yet more Guggenmusik and DJ performances until 03:00am! Entrance is free. Friday

On Friday evening (21:00 – 02:30) legendary punk band UK Subs will be preforming at the Musikzentrum Sedel in Emmenbrücke (Sedelhof 2, 6020). The Subs are an English punk band who formed during the first wave of British punk in 1976! Tickets cost CHF 30.- and can be brought online here. Doors open at 20:00

Also on Friday evening is ‘Radio Confetti’ at the Grand Casino Luzern (Haldenstrasse 6, 6006) the official Fasnachts party from Radio Pilatus! The evening will include DJ music, Guggenmusik and a fancy dress competition with plenty of prizes to be won including “Vonarburg” gift vouchers worth CHF 300.-, CHF 500.- and CHF 700.-!

And in Weggis is the Narre-Nacht or Masked Ball organised by Guggenmusik group the Rigischränzer Weggis! The party, which will be held at the Mehrzweckhalle Sigristhofstatt (Rigiblickstrasse 2, 6353 Weggis), starts at 20:00 and continues into the small hours! With music from all genres and a competition for the best mask it should be a fun evening! Entrance costs just CHF 15.- but is free for anyone wearing a full mask (until 22:00)!

Saturday aka. Rüüdig Samschtig 

From 13:30 – 18:30 is the Fasnacht Seniors Party (for the young at heart, over 60s crowd) at the Grand Casino Luzern (Haldenstrasse 6, 6006). With entertainment, dancing and awards for the most original masks and costumes! Tickets cost CHF 5.- and more information can be found here.

Are your kids interested in learning cross country skiing? On Saturday afternoon from 14:00 – 16:00 is ‘X-Country Kids’ in Langis 6063 Stalden (Sarnen). The event is hosted in association with Skiclub Schwendi / Langis and Glanzmann Sport and is open to kids aged 6 – 13. Equipment is available to rent and the afternoon costs just CHF 5.- per child!  More information can be found here. This is a great event for anyone with children who is looking to escape the city this weekend!

And on Saturday evening in Engelberg you can enjoy a fun evening of night tobogganing and cheese fondue! The 3.5 km route from Gerschnialp to Engelberg is open from 19:30 21:30 and you can have as many runs as you like! After that, what better way to warm up than with a bubbling pot of cheese fondue?! Tickets for both the tobogganing and fondue meal cost CHF 57.- for adults and CHF 36.- children (it is also possible to purchase tickets for just the tobogganing). Sunday

On Sunday afternoon (12:00-15:00) the Alpineum Kaffeehaus Bar (Denkmalstrasse 11, 6006) will be serving up tasty burgers for their ‘Big Bang Burger Sunday’! The perfect place to chill out and rest your dancing feet after the festivities of Saturday night!  Vegetarian options are also available!
